Just stumbled over this piece of mine on the net…

The audio-visual piece “Mnemonics”was realized back in 2002 (or so) and it is also part of my DVD release “Fragmented Memory”. The piece received quite some visibility with some 30 screenings on various festivals (e.g. Videoformes which seems to have uploaded it here.

Several short samples of TV-advertising form the visual base material of the piece. This base material is being stretched by visual “granulation” and “looping”, being transformed into layers of abstract textures. This process reveals the inherent structure of the media footage. The stereotypical nature of postures and gestures in these images emerge through this extreme time stretch and rhythmical montage of images.

The music follows the same creative principle of granulation, looping and abstraction of its base material. The sound drives the visuals, forms the sonic and rhythmical base for the piece. Sound and images fold into overlapping layers oscillating between information and noise.

Images and sounds aim to form an inseparable pulsating system…

America’s Game (from Fragemented Memory)

“America’s Game” combines abstract digital music and abstract digital video into an audio-visual composition, a system of computer manipulated images and sounds.

The visual base material of the piece is a 5 second TV sample of a “media incident” that took place at a baseball game in Chicago in September 2002.

This base material is being stretched out by visual “granulation” into some 5 minutes. The inherent structure of the media footage and underlaying violence emerge through this extreme time stretch and rhythmical montage of images.

The music drives the visuals, forms the metro and rhythmical base for the piece. Sound and images fold into overlapping layers of images oscillating between construction and destruction, information and noise.

Images and sounds form an inseparable pulsating system.

Bosa 2 (from Fragmented Memory)

“Bosa 2″ is part of my DVD “Fragmented Memory” containing a collection of 8 sound/video pieces. “Bosa 2″ is an attempt to transform an electronic sound composition (more or less) directly into the visual domain.

The visual part is composed of three elements (blue/green/red) corresponding to the three building blocks of the sound composition. All visual elements were created and triggered directly by the audio signals of its corresponding sound element.

“Bosa 2″ (as well as all other pieces of the “Fragmented Memory” collection) work on multiple perception modes (without passing any test of consistency). They contain continuous links into symbolic, abstract and emotional spaces by constantly interweaving these modes. This poses questions of a hierarchy of perception and sensory information.

Bosa 2 has been presented at VAD Video and Digital Arts International Festival (Girona, Spain, 2005), Unsound Festival (Krakow, Poland, 2005), Festival Sonoimagenes 2005 (Buenos Aires, Argentinia), 2nd Media Arts Festival Armenia (Yerevan, Armenia, 2005), Sonic Arts Network’s Expo 966 2005 (Hull, UK), Thailand New Media Arts Festival 2005 (Thailand, Bangkog), Konzerthaus and Museumsquartier (Vienna, Austria, 2005), Sonic Art Network’s SoundCircus 2004 (Leicester, UK), Harvestworks (NY, USA, 2004), Syracuse University and Spark Contemporary Art Space (Syracuse, USA, 2004).
