Am 7.11.2025 durfte ich Teil eines Konzerts des Vienna Improvisers Orchestra beim großartigen Music Unlimited 39 in Wels sein. Das Orchestra eröffnete mit einem energiegeladenen Set das Festival und setzte einen wunderbaren Akzent für den weiteren Verlauf des Festivals.
Hier ist ein Mitschnitt des gesamten Konzertes der die Praxis des „conducted instant composition“ – einer eigenständigen Form strukturierter Echtzeit- Komposition, bei der Improvisation und Dirigat auf besondere Weise miteinander verschmelzen, wunderbar dokumentiert.
Die Basis des “instant Composing and conducting” ist ein Handzeichensystems, das im Zusammenspiel zwischen Dirigent:in und Musiker:innen kollektive Kompositionen im Moment – offen, vielschichtig und immer wieder überraschend entstehen lässt. Die Methode knüpft an die „Conductions“ von Butch Morris an, doch Michael Fischer und das VIO entwickelten daraus eine ganz eigene Praxis.

On November 7, 2025, I had the pleasure of being part of a concert by the Vienna Improvisers Orchestra at the magnificent Music Unlimited 39 festival in Wels. The orchestra opened the festival with an energetic set, setting a wonderful tone for the rest of the event.
Here is a recording of the entire concert, which beautifully documents the practice of “conducted instant composition”—a unique form of structured, real-time composition in which improvisation and conducting merge in a special way.
The basis of “instant composing and conducting” is a system of hand signals that, through the interplay between conductor and musicians, allows collective compositions to emerge in the moment—open, multifaceted, and always surprising. The method is inspired by Butch Morris’s “conductions,” but Michael Fischer and the VIO have developed their own distinct practice from it.
