Nerve Theory
Nerve Theory is the collective identity of Bernhard Loibner & Tom Sherman.
The trans-continental sound/video/voice duo was formed in 1998, and has since collaborated on numerous live performances, video tapes, radio pieces, network appearances, and sound/voice recordings.
Nerve Theory has developed and refined a type of performance - they call it 'VidSonics'. It involves the live improvisational mix of video, sound (a sonic environment from which music emerges) and speech/text.
They are also pioneers of network based collaboration, which they first started in the early 1990s when they were introduced by Heidi Grundmann for collaborations broadcast and webcast by Kunstradio, a radio art program of the ORF, the austrian national radio network.
Tom Sherman is a media artist and writer who splits his time between Syracuse, New York, and the South Shore of Nova Scotia. Sherman studied visual art, and started out as a sculptor - but over the years has worked in audio, radio, television, video, peformance, and text. He has represented Canada in the Venice Biennale, and his work has been shown in over a hundred exhibitions in North America, Europe, and Asia. In 2002 the Banff Centre Press published an anthology of his writing: "Before and After the I-Bomb: An Artist in the Information Environment". In 2003 he was awarded the Canada Council’s Bell Canada Award for excellence in video art. He currently is a Professor at Syracuse University in its Department of TransMedia.
